Name: Andrew Koning
Favourite colour: Orange. For a number of reasons.
- It’s exciting nothing boring is ever orange
- Being Dutch orange is a very important color culturally to me and keeps me anchored in my family traditions and culture.
Favourite movie: That’s a really tough question. I have so many that I like, but I would have to say Shawshank Redemption and Courageous are two of my favorites.
Favourite music artist or band: I love House Music, but I can seriously listen to and enjoy all music. Maybe I could do without Yoko Ono
Favourite cartoon growing up: I didn’t watch a whole lot of TV growing up but I loved Winnie-the-Pooh and later on Spiderman and The Simpsons
What I Wanted to be When I Grew Up: I never really had one thing I wanted to be when I grew up. I love politics and could see myself involved in that someday, but nothing concrete right now.
Hey my name is Andrew and I am your student union President. This is my senior year at Concordia and my third term as President; you are probably wondering what exactly I do as President well let me explain: my job is somewhat similar to a Vice President’s, but unlike a VP who is responsible for setting the agenda for their specific department be it Finance or External, I set the overall direction of the CSA as a whole, investing in new furniture around campus, applying for membership in different provincial and national student organizations, and lobbying the government on different issues are just a few of the things that I do as President. I am also responsible for managing the VP’s and ensuring they follow CSA By-Laws, that they spend money in a responsible manner, and I assist them whenever they might need it. As President I am one of the signing authorities, the other being Vice President of Finance, of the CSA and am responsible for signing all long-term multiyear agreements with different entities, and I ensure accountability when it comes to who should be getting paid each month. I sit on a number of committees at Concordia: the Board of Governors, the Education Policy Committee, the Student Life Committee, and Admissions and Scholarship Committee are just four of the committees or boards I sit on as student representative. Whenever I cannot attend committee meetings consistently I appoint an executive to be my replacement. The most important responsibility in my opinion is representing students and acting as an advocate for them. If there is an issue with the Registrar’s office, allegations of plagiarism, or maybe they are suffering depression and need someone to talk to, it is my responsibility to navigate the institutional bureaucracy and ensure that the student gets the help they need in a timely manner and/or that the student’s rights are respected. If you are interested further I urge you to stop by the CSA offices located in A207 and check us out.
